A Dog Mom's Guide to Hiking with Your Dog

Fall Hiking Essentials for Your Dog

Fall is hands down my favorite season to hike with my dog. The air is crisp, the leaves are vibrant, and the trails are usually quieter than summer. For me, it feels like the perfect mix of adventure and peace. But hiking with a dog takes a little extra prep — and after a few years of trial and error, I’ve nailed down the essentials that make our fall hikes safe, fun, and stress-free.

Why Fall Is the Best Season for Hiking With Dogs

Cooler temperatures mean my pup isn’t overheating like he might in summer, and we don’t have to bundle up quite as much as we do in winter. According to REI’s guide to hiking with dogs , fall is one of the most comfortable and rewarding times to hit the trail — as long as you plan ahead and pack right.

What I Always Pack for Fall Hikes

  • Water & bowl: Even when it’s cool out, hydration is a must. I bring our Happy Pet 3-in-1 Water Bottle so I’m never juggling a separate bowl.
  • Snacks & treats: Trail mix for me, training treats for my pup. Keeps us both fueled and makes recall easier when he’s distracted by all the new smells.
  • Enrichment break: If we stop for a snack, I’ll pull out the treat ball . It gives him a job to do while I enjoy the view (and my granola bar).
  • Layers & comfort: Fall weather changes fast. I bring a light jacket for me and a small blanket so my dog has a cozy spot if we stop at a chilly overlook.
  • Safety basics: Leash, harness, ID tags, and poop bags. REI also recommends checking trail rules — some areas require dogs on-leash at all times.

Extra Tips for a Great Fall Hike

  • Check the trail before you go — not all parks allow dogs.
  • Bring a towel for muddy paws (trust me, you’ll thank yourself later).
  • Keep an eye on daylight — fall sunsets sneak up faster than you think.

Why It Matters

For me, hiking in the fall isn’t just about exercise. It’s about slowing down, breathing fresh air, and sharing those golden autumn days with my dog. He gets the sniffing, exploring, and adventure he craves — and I get to unplug and reset. It’s our happiest season together.
